Epiphany 3

“Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21). By these words, Jesus reveals that He is the promised Messiah, the One anointed by the Spirit of God to bring good news to the poor, liberty to the captives, and sight to the blind. Yet, Jesus doesn’t reserve the Spirit of God to Himself. In Holy Baptism, He pours out that same Spirit upon us, adopting us into His death and resurrection. As baptized children of God, we, too, are anointed and appointed to proclaim the Lord’s favor in the very places where we live, learn, work, and play. Through Christ, God’s promises are completely fulfilled, and through the work of His Spirit, our lives bear witness to the Good News of Jesus in a world that desperately needs it.
